    Description

This is a solid spruce wood alphorn made in Austria by "Heimatklang". It is in the key of F and has cherry wood accents. This horn is a spare horn that has been used for about a year by the Sierra Alphorn Players--feel free to look us up on Facebook or YouTube. We are a group of alphorn players in the Lake Tahoe area, and we keep a few spare horns on hand to loan to people who want to give the alphorn a try. At the moment we have one or two more horns than we need, so we are going to be selling this one. This horn will be provided with everything that is necessary so it will be ready to play immediately. This horn will be cleaned and sterilized prior to shipping.
Below is a video of this horn being played at one of our weekly rehearsals at Davis Creek Regional Park near Reno, NV. This horn is playing the melody (the highest part) in the songs.

This horn has not been getting much use, which is the main reason why we are selling it. The horn has been fully treated and conditioned to ensure maximum longevity--usually when you purchase a new alphorn it has either not been fully oiled, or it has only been varnished inside and out. Alphorns need to be given a very comprehensive oil treatment to ensure that they will last for many years; since they are made of several pieces of relatively thin wood they naturally have a tendency to warp and crack if left untreated. Add in to that the moisture that is left inside the horn when it is played, and you will quickly develop problems if the horn is not treated carefully from the start. This horn has had the inside fully oiled with pure food-grade walnut oil 8 times over the last 12 months.
This horn has been wrapped by us in a tough, strong polymer. This is done for two reasons: first, the wrapping again helps to prevent warping and cracking of the top sections of the horn over time. Second, the wrapping is there to protect the horn from incidental knocks and bumps that will naturally occur if the horn receives regular use. This tough composite wrapping has been chosen specifically to ensure that this horn can be taken on mountain back-country hikes to alpine lakes with no fear that the horn will get damaged in the process.
This horn is in good condition, but it has been used. There is some light scuffing on the bell of the horn--spruce is a fairly soft wood, so you should expect that the bell will get a bit scratched up (especially on the bottom side) with regular use. The connection pieces have a few scratches, but they work well. The bell of this horn has been hand-painted by Brandi Jones, who is one of the members of the Sierra Alphorn Players. The painting shows some of her favorite Sierra flowers-- California Poppy, Indian Paintbrush and Monkey Flower.
This horn will come with a polycarbonate and carbon steel music stand and attachment lyre. This music stand is also used and the polycarbonate will have some scratches, but if you are playing in the wind then it is a life saver. This horn will also come with a simple tubular steel stand so you don't have to put the horn on the ground in between songs, and a traditional wooden mouthpiece. Alternatively we can provide a brass mouthpiece adapter instead of the wooden mouthpiece on request. This horn will come with the carrying bag shown in the pictures, which is water-resistant and includes backpack straps. Finally, we will include a couple of short books of alphorn solos and duets with the horn.
Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions about this horn, our alphorn group, of alphorns in general!
