    Description

Exceptionally Graphic Large Vintage Hand-Woven Navajo American Indian Four-Figure Yei Rug Weaving, probably 1940's-70's.
    This strong, large Navajo
    (Diné)
weaving has very colorful aniline-dyed commercial yarns and great visual impact and was li
kely made in the Farmington, NM area in 1940's-70's. The composition is strongly influenced by the austere geometry of Navajo sand paintings.  The 4 female Yei figures have colorful kilts and sashes and hold various sacred objects, which I cannot positively identify.  The weaving is very fine (+/-9 warps and +/-56 wefts per inch) and has a fair number of lazy lines in the greenish blue-gray broader areas of the ground.  At first, I thought the yarns were homespun because of irregularities in the spinning but now believe that the yarns are a fine 4-strand commercial yarn, possibly made pre -1950 when the colors were more primary and reminiscent of earlier Transitional Navajo weavings from around 1900.
This large weaving has tremendous visual impact and is a strong example of Holy Beings depicted in the style of sacred Sand Paintings.
Dimensions:  58-1/2" long x 41-1/2" tall.  Weaving has +/- 9 warps and +/-56 wefts per inch.
Condition:  Very Good. No breaks, holes, moth damage or repairs were observed.  There are several very minor stains (see photos), which are visually unobtrusive.
