Description
White Sands National Park is an American National Park located in the state of New Mexico, 15 miles southwest of Alamogordo and 52 miles northeast of Las Cruces. The park is situated at an average elevation of about 4,000 feet in the Tularosa Basin and comprises the southern part of 1 275 sq. miles field of white sand dunes composed of gypsum crystals. The dunes were created from exposed selenite crystals that eroded into gypsum grains and were then transported eastward by prevailing winds. It is the largest dune field of its kind on Earth.

he park was originally designated White Sands National Monument in 1933 by President Herbert Hoover and designated as a national park in 2019. The park encompasses 145,762 acres protecting 115 sq. miles of dune field. The depth of gypsum sand across the entire field is about 30 feet, while the tallest dunes are about 60 feet high. According to the Koppen climate classification system, White Sands National Park has a continental of “cold semi-arid climate” bordering on a “cold desert climate” which about 600,000 visitors take advantage of each year. The White Sands National Park is the most visited NPS site in New Mexico.

his Real Photo Card credited to the “U.S. Park Service” captures the beauty of the White Sands National Park. There is a car and a gentleman standing on the dune to the left and he looks like a miniature. It is not postmarked but was published between 1930 and 1950 and is in good condition. There is minor wear and a nice, clean and clear image. The reverse is also clean.
